VISION |
You know our ancestors were
good people, and one day," he (my father) says, "time is the
father of truth, one day you are going to write it, the true
history. You are going to allow it that the people of your
generation… you are going to re-write all that. You're going
to repossess what has been stolen away, what has been taken
away from you". |
Dialogue
Konrad Sioui, Grand Chief of Wendake

Ceremonial welcome by the traditional Chief of the Onondaga
Nation
TADODAHO SID HILL
The text which follows is adapted from the
Thanksgiving Prayer and traditional welcome spoken by
Tadodaho Sid Hill. Please note that his full ceremonial
welcome can be heard in the UN webcast and audio recordings.
Greetings to all who are assembled here
We put our minds together and we give thanks. The
peace is here with us that they have planted and
help take care of us for sustenance. It is here to
help all of us as we walk about. From the sky world
the four messengers help guide us, the good mind
that we use during the times that we walk on earth
And we receive this message of peace and how to
carry on our duties for us who survive on this earth
here. |
We kindly put our minds together, the sky world and the
Creator.
That is all.

I am Tadodaho, one of the leaders
of the Haudenosaunee. As such, I am familiar with the facts
and circumstances pertaining to the Haudenosaunee's and the
Onondaga Nation's spiritual, cultural and historic practices
concerning the land, the water and the creatures of the
Natural World. I am a member of the Onondaga Nation's
Council of Chiefs and have been present for and participated
in numerous meetings when the matters of the Nation's land
rights have been discussed. Further, I am familiar with the
oral traditions of the Onondaga Nation and the Haudenosaunee
relative to our lands and how they were lost.
The Onondaga Nation is one of the member nations of the
Haudenosaunee, also known as the Six Nations Iroquois
Confederacy. The Onondaga Nation is a sovereign nation and
has entered into treaties with many other nations. The
Onondaga Nation is a distinct political entity with
inherent, sovereign rights of self-determination and
governance. The Onondaga Nation is the central fire and the
fire keepers of the Haudenosaunee. Onondaga convenes the
meetings of the Grand Council, the governing body of the
Haudenosaunee. The other Nations of this Confederation are
the Mohawk Nation, the Oneida Nation, the Cayuga Nation, the
Seneca Nation and the Tuscarora Nation.

Tadodaho Sid Hill and many others attending the
opening ceremony of the 10th Session of the
Permanent Forum in the General Assembly are a
testimony to more than 500 years of colonization and
resistance. Each indigenous delegate is a survivor.
And for that, one also gives thanks.
However, although many Indigenous nations are
represented in this room, they are not yet fully
recognized as nations within the family of nations.
On this occasion of the 10th Anniversary of the
Permanent Forum, let the dialogue between nations
and nation states be elevated to new heights of
respect and partnership, resulting in mutual
decision-making beneficial to all who have come here
to share and to review this process: reconciliation
and implementation of new international strategies,
relationships, stronger communities and United
Nations member states and agencies enriched by each
other's presence. Safe journeys home. |
Election of the Chairperson of the Permanent Forum on
Indigenous Issues. |
Mr.
SAUL VINCENTE VASQUEZ, Zapotec, from
Oaxaca, Mexico, Member of the Permanent Forum and a
long-time community leader, organizer and human rights
activist put forth the name of Permanent Forum member, DR.
MYRNA CUNNINGHAM KAIN to become the Chairperson for the
Tenth Session of the Permanent Forum.
I would like to submit the name of a woman on my list, I
have names of extraordinary women, and yet, I have one to
present,
Dr. Myrna Cunningham, an extraordinary
women, fighting for her lands and her territories. She
continues to fight for the young so the struggles for her
peoples' rights will be maintained…and in the prophesies for
her people. I am now proposing Dr. Myrna Cunningham.
Ms.
HELEN KALJULATE,
Permanent Forum member
from Estonia, seconded the motion.

Indigenous People can teach the modern world
about sustainable development
16/05/2011
The
ancient traditions of indigenous peoples around the
world can help overcome modern problems of 'green'
living, the Secretary-General of the UN, Ban Ki-moon has
said.
The tenth session of the
Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues
has opened in New York.
Around the world there are more than 370 million
indigenous people living in 90 different countries.
Ban Ki-moon said indigenous people have always lived in
tune with the environment, but many of their cultures
are under threat.
"Indigenous cultures are threatened with extinction.
Millions of indigenous peoples continue to lose their
lands, their rights and their resources. They make up
one-third of the world's one billion rural poor. And
they are among the most vulnerable and marginalized of
any group. Indigenous women, who are the custodians of
so much rich heritage, often suffer the most."
