DISCUSSIONS MOVING FORWARD ON INDIGENOUS PEOPLES‘ RIGHTS

April 27, 2004

The Member states of the Organization of American States opened their third round of negotiations on Wednesday, April 28 to seek consensus on the draft American Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The meeting was inaugurated by OAS Assistant Secretary General Luigi Einaudi as well as Working group Chairman Ambassador Juan León Alvarado, Alternate Ambassador of Guatemala to the OAS, and a representative of the indigenous peoples.

The agenda for the three-day meeting revolves around issues related to cultural identity and organization as well as political rights covered under the proposed American Declaration.
