Immediately following his election by acclamation as Chairperson of the Permanent Forum, Edward John, from Canada, said: “There is a continuing need for all of us […] to take collaborative and coordinated actions, bold and effective, to address the continued discrimination, racism, marginalization, extreme poverty and conflict faced by indigenous peoples,” urging action over indifference, “because indifference is the breeding ground for intolerance.”

STATEMENT BY ARTHUR MANUEL ON BEHALF OF THE GLOBAL CAUCUS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

This presentation consists of recommendations and concerns of the Global Caucus during its preparatory meeting on May 5th. It was diligently crafted by the excellent team of rapporteurs and writing team of the Global Caucus and represents the collectives position of the Indigenous Peoples who contributed to the statement through presentations to the Global Caucus. It was considered by the Indigenous Peoples who heard the presentation as an accurate representation of their recommendations to the PFII. (more)

ECUMENICAL PANEL KICKS OFF UN FORUM ON INDIGENOUS ISSUES

The Episcopal Church and other faith groups were among the sponsors of the U.N. panel session, titled “Churches Disavow the Doctrine of Discovery: Calling for Poverty Alleviation and Healing,” which sought to address education, land rights, reconciliation, healing and practical next steps.
